Summer time?

Hey there,

How’s things with you? I hope all is well and you are, like us in the UK, enjoying the early summer.

It has been swelteringly hot, topping 34 degrees I believe, on Monday, but I am not complaining. Unlike a woman on the bus last week, who complained she couldn’t breathe when temperatures had hit a mere 23 degrees… I think some people just need something to moan about. I, however, will always be grateful for the sun. When you live in England and the summer can be very hit and miss, I will gladly enjoy the sweaty heat as before we know it, we’ll be shivering again under several layers of clothing.

It’s fortunate that the excellent weather has fallen on half term week so, the park has been visited a few times already and we are fully stocked with ice creams and lollies.

Our bounty of iced goods was purchased yesterday – after I got in a strop.

It was a completely reasonable reaction which I’m sure you’ll agree with.

As with any household, at some point a trip to the supermarket becomes necessary. But, with it being half term, the girls didn’t want to get up at an acceptable time to help – silly me. So of course, I found myself going into their room a hundred times only to be met with moans and the two of them falling back to sleep as soon as I left.

I decided to go on my own because one of my pet peeves is being in any shop – supermarket especially – when it’s busy. I am a ‘ get in, get what I need and get out’ kind of woman. I cannot abide standing in a cue for ten hours or trying to get past the shoppers who want to mill around, stroll or stop to look at something interesting just as I’m trying to pass and then have the cheek to look at me as if I’m the one in the wrong.

Therefore, I didn’t have time to wait for Older Miss and Littler Miss to finally deign me with their presence. Little Dude had already given me his moan about going shopping so I snatched up the bags for life from the kitchen and went in a huff towards the door.

Seriously, sometimes I feel like the Little Red Hen. If you don’t know the story, look it up, it’s a good one.

The Red Hen does all the work and the other animals are too busy (or lazy) to assist. When the hen produces some delicious looking food from all her work, the other animals turn up to help her eat it – the cheek!

LD came chasing after me, put his shoes on and said ‘Sorry, Mum.’

Of course, I melted but I wasn’t prepared to show him just then. But he wasn’t finished. He picked up the bags, took my hand and we headed out the door together.

My huff disappeared.

LD is almost ten-years-old now. I doubt he will want to hold my hand for much longer so I savour the moments when he does.

Our trip to the supermarket was non-eventful but fun. LD still finds wonder in the small things, can have an idea spark from looking at a lemon and takes great pleasure in getting me to do silly walks regardless of who might be watching.

I hope he will always find the fun in everything – obviously whilst being a super mature, caring and responsible human.

His reward for joining me on our food shop was deciding which ice cream/lollies to buy – although he made sure to choose something his sisters would like so I guess he’s already there with the maturity, caring and responsibility thing. ❤

I’m off to enjoy a sneaky piece of lemon drizzle cake before bed.

Speak soon xx

  1. OMG I was reading this and thinking of the Red Hen book!!!! My mum used to and still does reads it to me every time she needs help in the kitchen!

more importantly- how are you the shopper that is in and out? I am the complete opposite- I love looking at everything (even if it is not on the list) – probably explains why I had a freezer full of ice cream. So, what flavour did you get – mint choc??

    1. I love that your mum reads this when she needs help!

But that’s how you end up buying things you don’t need – stick to the list! 🙂
And I would never sink so low as to buy mint choc ice cream…
