Feeling comfortable? No? Me either…

Hiya,

So, back in 2017, I wrote this:

You’re not going to believe this but I did it – I resigned (insert scared face here)! It had to be done – I mean, who in their right mind works in the fashion industry anyway (no offence intended – well… maybe a little…)? Years of directors patting the designers on the back when things were selling and immediately blaming the garment tech when they weren’t have made me more than a little jaded (obviously, I’m a lowly tech…). In the end, even designers were side-stepped for buyers who apparently knew it all – and they really didn’t – no one did but they clearly found the silent ‘I’ in team…

So, just a few short weeks and I’ll be free!  Obviously, I’ll have to work (haven’t won the lottery just yet) but not having to do the 9-5 thing – being able to choose my hours and most importantly – being able to be around for the little people in my life who are growing up way too fast!  Did I tell you Bubs is walking now??  9 months!!  Yes – he took his first steps at 9 months!!  Like I said – growing up waaaayy to fast! And he decided to take those first steps across the kitchen to me when my phone was on the other side of the room and and my hands were covered in juice from peeling an apricot (it was for Bubs before you say anything) – thanks Bubs.

Anyway, back to the work thing… So, what will I miss about work?  Hmmm… I will not miss the commute – crammed like a sardine into a tube carriage – one hundred times worse in the Summer.

Hmmm… I will not miss monthly tech meetings – meetings that have three or four things on the agenda but somehow end up going on and on and on… for almost 2 hours because people like to repeat what was just said.  And heaven forbid someone should disagree with a point or we would never leave the room!  Yep, people sure did like to talk when all I wanted to do was eat my lunch.

Speaking of food – that’s another thing I won’t miss – constant snacking!!  Why is it when I’m at work I have to constantly find something to snack on?  My desk draw was full of cereal bars, nuts, seeds (trying to be healthy) but come 3pm I’d generally take a trip to the vending machine for a chocolate bar.  I’ve probably saved a fortune just from being at home (doubt Mr E would agree with that one!)…

I won’t even miss the sample sales – people grabbing as much stuff as they can carry just because it’s cheap – too much effort if you ask me.  I’m still waiting for Mr E to take me somewhere grand enough so I can wear my red, strapless, full length with puddle train evening gown that I got from a sample sale years ago (yeah, I said it Mr E) – so I clearly don’t need to buy any more stuff.

No, I won’t miss work but then – I never did have a ‘passion for fashion’ (I can’t believe people actually put that on their cv’s).  Some people do though and are currently living the dream – although if you’re a BAA I’d dispute that it was their dream to still be at work at 8pm whilst their buyer sauntered off at 6pm…

I take it back – this is a pretty comfortable place to be.  Officially signing off from the rat race.

2022 Update:

Isn’t it funny that all the stuff I’m not going to miss have been mostly eliminated with the work from home directive? And now companies are struggling to get people back in the office (how is that a surprise to anyone? Working in my sweatpants – sounds great!).

I only partially escaped the rat race, but I’ll fill you another time 😊
