Hey Friend,
Well. We officially have a new king.
Yay.
The build-up to the coronation this past week has been… How do I put this? Boring? Tiresome? Strange (People camping out several days before to get a glimpse of the carriage as it passes by, I’m referring to you with that last one).
I’m sorry, but how many times did we need to hear about it? Yes, yes, an historic event, blah, blah, blah. But it did leave me wondering what else was going on in the world that was being ignored…
Bubs wasn’t impressed with my lack of excitement. What can I say? I’m not a royalist, but I was interested to see these two, rather doddery old people become King and Queen Consort (I can’t call her ‘Queen’ – it’d be disrespectful to Lizzie…). And it did tickle me that it ‘rained on his parade’ as Older Miss had been hoping, just so she could use that phrase.
Bubs roped Mr E in to make him an orb, sceptre and crown (which he proudly brought to school on Friday) and on Saturday, he sat ready with his crown on a cushion, his sceptre in hand. I joined him on the sofa.
After the first twenty minutes he asked ‘How long is this going to go on for?’
I shushed him so I could hear what was being said.
‘But Mummy, I thought you said you weren’t interested in the coronation?’
‘No. I said I wasn’t interested in the build-up.’
‘The build-up? What’s that?’
‘I mean all of the talk before it. Shhhhh!’
He went back to his book, occasionally glancing up at the screen and wondering why on earth there was so much singing involved… Bubs was particularly amused at Charles’ new outfit after he’d been anointed (‘Look at his gold coat!’) and wanted to know who he had to fight with his fancy sword.
Eventually, the moment arrived and I followed the Archbishop, giving Bubs his orb and sceptre before crowning him King Bubs. He was pleased. So pleased in fact that he said,
‘Can we watch something else now, Mummy?’
Needless to say, I watched the rest of the service by myself…
The TV was switched off as soon as they left the church and I only switched it back on to watch the Red Arrows do their ‘red, white and blue’ thing over the palace.
And there you have it. Job done. Coronation over.
How did you celebrate the coronation? Or did you thing it was a complete waste of time? Comment below and let me know 😊
