There’s a bit of a chill in the air…

Hey Friend, how’s things?

You won’t believe how cold it is at the moment. It is absolutely freezing here in England. The frost covering rooftops and grass looks gorgeous but who actually wants to be outside in this chill? I’m sure someone enjoys winter but I’m really not a fan. I do, however, enjoy Christmas with all the sparkly lights and decorations. I love all the family coming together and hanging out.

Usually, at my son’s school they have a winter fair and a winter concert. He – at the grand age of six – is too old for the nativity play now. The winter concert is usually fun though. The orchestra play – the girls have both been part of it in the past – and the children sing carols and Christmas songs interspersed with poems and readings. I have missed it the last few years and was looking forward to it this year.

The winter fair was okay… I wouldn’t be too bothered to miss that one, to be honest. It’s normally across the lower halls of the school with the school band playing but because it’s indoors it’s normally a bit of a squeeze. The food isn’t great, there aren’t many games and there’s a lot of tat on sale. A lot. However, in the summer the school put on the first summer fair since before the lockdowns and it was brilliant. It was their biggest and best and the last overseen by the outgoing Headteacher. So, I was expecting something from the new Head, making her mark so to speak.

Well. She is making her mark but not in the way you’d expect.

The winter fair is out. Now, to be fair to her, in this day and age you probably don’t want to be crammed in a hall with loads of people and their kids so, I can give her that one.

However, the winter concert has been replaced with – wait for it – a Seasonal Singsong. What’s that, I hear you say? Doesn’t sound too bad. Hmmm. Well. I’m disappointed the children that play instruments won’t get the chance to show off all their hard work – and I say that completely unbiased as the girls have left the school and Bubs is yet to play an instrument. I’m disappointed they won’t get to read their poems and stories or sing with their classes.

Well, at least you still get to sing, you say. Indeed. But did I mention the Seasonal Singsong is going to be held outdoors in the playground? Yeah. Doesn’t sound so good now, does it? If you’re still in doubt please go back to the start of this post where I talk about ice on the ground. I mean, outside?

Not only is it outside but it was to be from 3.30pm-4.30pm. School finishes at 3pm…

I can only imagine other parents saw how ridiculous this was too as an email came through on Friday afternoon. It’s still outside but the time has been changed to 3pm-4pm and was signed off with a cheery ‘Hope to see you all there!’

I think it’s safe to say that ‘all’ does not include me or bubs.

Wrap up warm and speak soon x
